How Long Will Beer Show on a Breathalyzer?

Posted by John Campanella | Feb 08, 2025 | 0 Comments

The length of time beer stays in your system and shows up on a breathalyzer depends on factors like your weight, metabolism, gender, and food intake. However, we can estimate it using the Widmark Formula for BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration):

BAC Formula
BAC Formula

Where:

  • Alcohol Consumed = (Ounces of beer) × (% Alcohol by Volume) × (0.789 g/mL)
  • r (Alcohol Distribution Ratio) = 0.68 for men, 0.55 for women
  • Body Weight is in grams (1 lb = 453.6 g)

Each standard beer (12 oz, 5% ABV) takes about 1 hour to metabolize, but a breathalyzer can detect alcohol for 12–24 hours depending on how much you drank.

How Long Will 1–6 Beers Show Up on a Breathalyzer?

Number of Beers Approximate BAC (180 lb Male) Time to Clear Breathalyzer

1 Beer (12 oz, 5%)

~0.02% BAC

1.5 - 2 hours

2 Beers

~0.04% BAC

3 - 4 hours

3 Beers

~0.06% BAC

4.5 - 6 hours

4 Beers

~0.08% BAC (Legal Limit)

6 - 7 hours

5 Beers

~0.10% BAC

7 - 8.5 hours

6 Beers

~0.12% BAC

9 - 10 hours

Important: Your BAC decreases by about 0.015% per hour after your last drink. So if you stop drinking at midnight with a BAC of 0.08%, you might not be completely sober until 6–7 AM.

Final Thoughts

  • If you only drink 1 beer, you might be able to pass a breathalyzer in about 1.5 - 2 hours.
  • If you drink 4 beers, you'll likely hit 0.08% BAC, and it can take 6-7 hours to clear your system.
  • Heavier beers with higher ABV (like IPAs or strong ales) raise BAC faster and take longer to metabolize.

👉 Pro Tip: If you plan on drinking, always give yourself enough time to sober up before driving. Using a personal breathalyzer or waiting at least 1 hour per beer can help you stay safe.

FAQs

1. How Long Will 1 Beer Show Up on a Breathalyzer?

If you drink one beer (12 oz, 5% ABV, like Bud Light or Firestone Walker 805), it will stay in your system for about 1.5 - 2 hours. A breathalyzer can detect it for up to 12–24 hours in some cases, depending on how fast your body processes alcohol.

2. How Long Will 2 Beers Show Up on a Breathalyzer?

Drinking two beers (e.g., Modelo Especial, Lagunitas IPA, each around 5-6% ABV) will raise your BAC to approximately 0.04% (for a 180 lb male) and may take 3 - 4 hours to clear from your breath completely.

3. How Long Will 3 Beers Show Up on a Breathalyzer?

If you drink three beers (like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Blue Moon, or Ballast Point Sculpin IPA at 5-7% ABV), your BAC could reach 0.06% and may take 4.5 - 6 hours to fully clear from a breathalyzer test.

4. How Long Will 4 Beers Show Up on a Breathalyzer?

Four beers, such as Stone IPA (6.9% ABV) or Russian River Pliny the Elder (8% ABV), will likely put you at 0.08% BAC (the legal limit for driving). It may take 6 - 7 hours for a breathalyzer to no longer detect alcohol in your system.

5. How Long Will 5 Beers Show Up on a Breathalyzer?

Drinking five beers, like Anchor Steam (4.9% ABV) or Green Flash West Coast IPA (7.3% ABV), can raise your BAC to 0.10% or more, requiring 7 - 8.5 hours before a breathalyzer gives a 0.00% reading.

6. How Long Will 6 Beers Show Up on a Breathalyzer?

Six beers, such as The Bruery Mischief (8.5% ABV) or Modern Times Orderville (7.2% ABV), may push BAC to 0.12% or higher. This means you might test positive on a breathalyzer for 9 - 10 hours or more.

7. Can a Breathalyzer Detect Beer After 24 Hours?

In most cases, no. A breathalyzer typically detects alcohol for up to 12–24 hours, but it depends on how much you drank, your metabolism, and other factors. However, urine and blood tests can detect alcohol for longer periods.

8. Does the Type of Beer Matter for a Breathalyzer?

Yes! Stronger beers with higher ABV (like IPAs and stouts) stay in your system longer than lighter beers. For example:

  • Bud Light (4.2% ABV) clears faster than
  • Pliny the Elder (8.0% ABV), which takes longer to metabolize.

9. What Can Help You Sober Up Faster?

  • Time: Only time can lower your BAC.
  • Water & Food: Helps slow alcohol absorption but won't make you sober faster.
  • Coffee & Showers: Won't reduce BAC but may make you feel more awake.

10. How Can I Avoid Failing a Breathalyzer?

  • Wait at least 1 hour per beer before driving.
  • Use a personal breathalyzer to check your BAC before getting behind the wheel.
  • Plan ahead by getting a ride or using public transportation.
